31st Annual People's Choice Awards

Millions of votes were cast to create the 31st Annual People's Choice Awards. The awards were presented at the Pasadena Civic Auditorium, just one short day before the Critics' Choice Awards and broadcasted on CBS with Jason Alexander and Malcolm Jamal Warner as co-hosts. This year's show had been revamped to include significant changes that reflect today's entertainment preferences with fun new categories like "Favorite Animated Movie Star," "Best Line," and "Favorite On-Screen Chemistry." For the first time, a web site was created for fans to vote for their choices in all categories.

Joining together with the culture-savvy editors at Entertainment Weekly, the new production team compiled a list of categories and potential nominees that mirror what people have been currently listening to or watching. Entertainment Weekly's Front Row Panel of over 6,000 entertainment fans recruited by the magazine from across the country. These panelists voted from the provided list of categories and potential nominees, and also had the option of writing in their own nomination choices. The top five selections in each category became the official nominees.

Among the winners were Nick Lachey and Jessica Simpson for heading "Favorite Reality TV Show - 24/7" with their hit, The Newlyweds. Michael Moore took home the Favorite Movie Award. Moore was "amazed" that Fahrenheit 9/11, which took a critical look at President Bush's actions after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, won this award and dedicated his win to the U.S. troops fighting overseas. Mel Gibson's explicit The Passion of the Christ won in the favorite drama category.

Mike Meyers' animated sequel, Shrek 2, picked up awards in numerous categories, winning as Favorite Comedy, Favorite Sequel, and Favorite Animated Movie. Will and Grace won for favorite TV comedy, up against Arrested Development, Scrubs, That '70s Show and Everybody Loves Raymond. After votes cast via the Internet during the first hour of the live telecast were counted, Joey was named favorite new comedy with Matt LeBlanc as Favorite Male TV Star and Desperate Housewives won for Favorite New TV Drama.

Favorite Leading Lady went to Renée Zellweger and Leading Man went to Brad Pitt. In terms of comedic performance, Ellen DeGeneres was the favorite as well as in the male category, Jim Carrey. American Idol beat out Donald Trump's The Apprentice as Favorite Reality Show - Competition and Ty Pennington's show Extreme Makeover: Home Edition" won for Best Reality Show - Makeover.

In terms of music, Usher took home the award for Favorite Male Singer and Alicia Keys took home the respective Favorite Female Singer. U2 took the cake away from Maroon 5, Outkast, No Doubt and Evanescence for Favorite Band. The awards went on and on this night, highlighting America's love for entertainment and showing these entertainers the recognition they deserve!
