Jamie Foxx

2006 American Music Awards

The awards season started off on a high note as music’s hottest stars gathered at the Shrine Auditorium for the 34th Annual American Music Awards. Comedian Jimmy Kimmel served as host of the show, which recognizes the best in pop/rock, country, soul/rhythm & blues, rap/hip hop, Latin, alternative, adult contemporary and contemporary inspirational music.

Songstress Beyoncé, clad in a beautiful sequined number, opened up the ceremony with her chart-topping hit “Irreplaceable.” Her beau, Jay-Z, fresh from retirement, came back into the spotlight with his song “Show Me What You Got” from his new album, Kingdom Come. Also returning to the music scene was new mom Gwen Stefani. The stylish rocker showed off her svelte figure as she yodeled and rapped to perfection with her single “Wind It Up.” Lionel Ritchie, introduced by his daughter and The Simple Life star, Nicole Ritchie, performed a medley of songs, including the ‘80s hit “All Night Long.” The Pussycat Dolls purred as they sang their brow-raising song “Buttons.” Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx serenaded the audience with “Wish You Were Here.” And The Queen of Hip-Hop Soul, Mary J. Blige, belted out her latest, “We Ride.”

In between the spectacular performances, presenters, including a surprise appearance by pop princess Britney Spears, handed out the coveted crystal statues. Winners were selected based on a survey from about 20,000 listeners.
